What is an Egg Donation treatment?

Procedure in which eggs are received from a donor, and they are fertilized In Vitro with sperm from the couple or from an anonymous donor.

What you should know about egg donation?

In Spain, egg donation is anonymous and is regulated by Royal Decree 412/1996 and by Laws 35/1988 and 14/2006.

At FIVMadrid, all donors are subjected to an exhaustive control, which provides a donation under all the medical, genetic, and psychological tests performed as recommended by the Spanish Fertility Society.

Standard procedure for egg donation

When is egg donation indicated?

  • When there is a spontaneous early ovarian failure, or as a consequence of surgeries, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy.
  • In case of maternal genetic diseases with a high risk of transmission and not susceptible to prevention through other procedures.
  • Previous failure of other Assisted Reproduction treatments.
  • Repeated failure of embryo implantation.
  • Advanced maternal age.

Origin of the eggs:

Young donors between 18 and 34 years old.

Preparation of the recipient’s endometrium:

The recipient woman must undergo hormonal treatment in order to prepare the uterus adequately for the implantation of the embryos. Some ultrasounds and medications will be necessary. This phase will last about a month and a half.

In the case of sperm from the partner, it is advisable to freeze a semen sample in the center, during endometrial preparation or at any other time.

In vitro laboratory and embryo culture.

When the endometrium of the recipient woman is prepared, the donor eggs are fertilized In Vitro. One day later, the fertilization process is checked and embryonic development is monitored in real-time (Time Lapse).

Embryo transfer.

It is a simple and painless process, which takes place between days 3 and 5 (blastocyst) of the culture.

The selected embryos (no more than two) are introduced into the uterus through a fine cannula under ultrasound control. The process takes between 10 and 20 minutes. Non-transferred embryos will be frozen.

After fertilization and the development of the embryos In Vitro, one or two are transferred to the uterus of the recipient woman in order to achieve pregnancy.
