If you have experienced a spontaneous miscarriage two or more times before the 21st week of pregnancy, at FIVMadrid, we will conduct a battery of tests to try to determine the cause of the miscarriages and if appropriate, recommend the treatment indicated in your case. However, treatment of repeated miscarriages is still highly controversial, as no treatment is supported by scientific evidence.
Age plays an important role in recurrent miscarriages. It is also generally agreed that most miscarriages are due to genetic origin. If the genetic alteration is of male origin, we will recommend AID or ICSI with PGD. If it is female in origin, we recommend egg donation or ICSI with PGD. The uterine factor can be corrected with surgery and there are specific treatments for endocrinal and immunological factors and thrombophilias.
Repeated miscarriages should not be confused with ‘IVF failure’, which is when good quality embryos are transferred, but do not implant. Although in both cases, the factors involved may be endocrinal or immunological, etc., IVF failure is more closely linked to alterations in endometrial receptivity, secondary to high circulating estradiol levels. To overcome this obstacle, one proposal is to freeze all of the embryos and transfer them in a natural cycle or a hormonally modified cycle.
At FIVMadrid, we adopt a holistic approach to fertility. We therefore offer acupuncture and hypnosis as ways to improve the chances of implantation. According to the current literature, these therapies reduce the level of stress which may accompany the embryo transfer.
If you become pregnant, your pregnancy can be considered a normal pregnancy. It is advisable to notify your obstetrician that you conceived using assisted reproduction techniques.
