Assisted reproduction treatment for female couples

The RIFV Method (Reception of Oocytes from the Partner) is an assisted reproduction treatment designed for female couples who wish to actively share the experience of motherhood. Thanks to this technique, both women play a direct role in the process: one provides the egg and the other carries the pregnancy to term.

At FIVMadrid, we support each couple closely and personally, answering all your questions and guiding you through every stage of the treatment so that you can go through this process with peace of mind and confidence.

What is the RIVF Method?

RIVF is based on in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The egg from one of the women in the couple is fertilised in the laboratory using donor sperm, and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus of the other woman, who will carry the pregnancy to term.

In this way, one of the women is the genetic mother and the other the surrogate mother, allowing both to play an active part in the biological and emotional process of pregnancy.

Who is eligible for the RIVF method?

The RIVF treatment is suitable for female couples, who do not need to be married. Following a personalised medical assessment, the medical team will provide detailed information on all available treatment options and recommend the most appropriate option in each case, whether this be the ROPA method itself or other assisted reproduction techniques such as artificial insemination, conventional in vitro fertilisation or egg donation.

Success rate of the RIVF method

The success rate of the ROPA Method mainly depends on the age of the woman donating the eggs. As a guideline:
  • Eggs from women under 35 years old: up to a 60% pregnancy probability.
  • Between 36 and 39 years old: success rates around 40–50%.
  • From 40 years old: around 35%, decreasing progressively with age.
The medical team will assess each case individually to provide a more accurate estimate.

The RIVF method, step by step

Treatment begins with an initial consultation, during which the medical histories of both women are reviewed and the necessary tests are requested. Using this information, the specialist will confirm whether the ROPA method is suitable and will draw up a personalised treatment plan. The patient care team will then provide you with all the relevant information regarding the process and the cost.

The first step in the treatment is to synchronise the menstrual cycles, usually using hormonal medication, in order to ensure that all stages of the process are properly coordinated.

The woman providing the eggs undergoes a personalised ovarian stimulation programme, which lasts approximately 12 to 15 days and is monitored via ultrasound scans. Once this phase is complete, an ovarian puncture is performed to retrieve the eggs, which will then be fertilised in the laboratory.

Fertilisation and embryo development are monitored using advanced systems such as time-lapse, which allow the embryos’ development to be assessed continuously.

At the same time, the woman carrying the pregnancy undergoes hormone treatment to prepare the endometrium. This phase usually lasts around a month and a half. Once the uterus is in optimal condition, the embryo transfer takes place – a simple, painless procedure in which one, or in some cases two, embryos are transferred.

Fertilisation and embryo development are monitored using advanced systems such as time-lapse, which allow the embryos’ development to be assessed continuously.

Following the transfer, a blood pregnancy test is carried out. If the result is positive, this is confirmed by an ultrasound scan approximately 15 days later, at which point monitoring of the pregnancy begins.

At FIVMadrid, we understand that the ROPA Method is much more than just a medical treatment. That is why we offer a friendly, warm and personalised service, supporting you every step of the way and addressing any concerns you may have. Your well-being and peace of mind are just as important as the outcome of the treatment.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about the RIVF Method

The RIVF (Reception of Oocytes from the Partner) method is an assisted reproduction treatment designed for female couples, in which one partner provides the egg and the other carries the pregnancy to term, enabling both to play an active role in parenthood.

The RIVF method is suitable for female couples, although they do not need to be married. A preliminary medical assessment is required to confirm that the treatment is suitable for both partners.

Yes. One of the women is the genetic mother, as she provides the egg, and the other is the surrogate mother, who carries the baby to term. Furthermore, the surrogate mother influences the baby’s development through epigenetic mechanisms during pregnancy.

Donor sperm is used, sourced from authorised banks and subject to strict medical and genetic screening, ensuring the highest level of safety.

The success rate depends mainly on the age of the woman providing the eggs. In women under 35, success rates can reach up to 60%, decreasing progressively with age.

No. The stages of treatment are medically supervised, and procedures such as embryo transfer are simple and painless. Ovarian puncture is carried out under sedation.

The full course of treatment usually lasts between 6 and 8 weeks, although this may vary depending on the individual’s response and the need to synchronise cycles.

It is usually recommended that a single embryo be transferred to reduce the risk of a multiple pregnancy, although the number is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Complete bed rest is not necessary. It is recommended that you take it easy and avoid strenuous activity on the day of the transfer.

If pregnancy is not achieved, the medical team will review the case and consider the available options, such as transferring vitrified embryos or planning a new cycle.

Yes. The RIVF method is a legally recognised treatment in Spain and is regulated by current legislation on assisted reproduction.
