Fertility Preservation

Egg freezing: making informed decisions

Are you thinking about starting a family in the future, but feel that now isn’t the right time? Are you worried that your ovarian reserve is declining? It’s completely normal to have these concerns. The ideal time to become a mother doesn’t always coincide with the ideal biological time, and egg freezing gives you a better chance of achieving this in the future if, should the need arise, you require assisted reproduction treatment.

At FIVMadrid, we support you so that you can plan your family with clear information and the backing of a medical team specialising in assisted reproduction, always by your side to answer any questions you may have.

What does fertility preservation involve?

Female fertility preservation is a treatment designed for women who wish to postpone motherhood without compromising their future chances of pregnancy. The procedure involves egg vitrification, an advanced freezing technique that preserves the eggs whilst maintaining their reproductive capacity until you decide to use them.

It is recommended that this treatment be carried out before the age of 35, as from this age onwards the quantity and quality of eggs decline progressively. However, each case is assessed on an individual basis.

Step-by-step guide to fertility preservation

The treatment usually lasts just over 15 days and begins at the start of the menstrual cycle. In some cases, it may be necessary to take contraceptives beforehand to synchronise the process.

Ovarian stimulation is carried out using gonadotropins, with the aim of promoting the development of several follicles. During this phase, regular ultrasound scans are carried out, as every woman responds differently and the treatment is tailored to the individual.

After approximately 12 days of stimulation, once the follicles have reached the appropriate size, an ovarian puncture is performed to retrieve the eggs. This procedure is carried out under sedation, is painless and is performed under ultrasound guidance.

The retrieved eggs undergo a process known as vitrification, an ultra-rapid freezing technique that uses cryoprotectants and liquid nitrogen at -196 °C, resulting in a survival rate of over 80% for the oocytes following thawing.

The vitrified eggs will remain in storage until you decide to start your family.

When the time comes, the eggs will be thawed and used in an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, either with your partner’s sperm or with donor sperm, depending on your personal circumstances.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Fertility Preservation

Fertility preservation is a treatment that involves freezing eggs using vitrification for future use, thereby maintaining a woman’s reproductive capacity and offering the possibility of postponing motherhood.

Ideally, fertility preservation should be carried out before the age of 35, as the quality and quantity of eggs decline progressively from that age onwards. However, each case is assessed on an individual basis.

The process usually takes between 15 and 20 days, from the start of the menstrual cycle to the vitrification of the eggs.

Yes. Ovarian stimulation is a safe, medically supervised procedure, with personalised ultrasound monitoring to tailor the treatment to each patient.

No. The ovarian puncture is carried out under sedation, so the procedure is painless and brief. After a few hours of rest, the patient can go home.

Vitrified eggs can be kept frozen for decades without losing quality, until the woman decides to use them.

Thanks to the vitrification technique, the survival rate of the eggs exceeds 80% after thawing, although in most cases it is over 90%.

When you decide to use them, the eggs are thawed and used in an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, using either your partner’s or a donor’s sperm, depending on your circumstances.

Fertility preservation does not guarantee pregnancy, but it does significantly increase the chances of achieving it in the future, especially if the eggs are frozen at a young age.

Yes. During ovarian stimulation, you can carry on with your normal life, avoiding only strenuous physical exercise as advised by your doctor.
