We are seeing an increasing number of reproductive dysfunctions caused by genetic errors. These include deletions in the Y chromosome in azoospermia, aneuploidies in repeated miscarriages, fragile X syndrome in early ovarian failure, etc. Some of these can be diagnosed with a karyotype, but others require molecular techniques.
All patients affected by these alterations require genetic counselling prior to treatment. At FIVMadrid, genetic counselling is provided by a multi-disciplinary team made up of FIVMadrid physicians and experts in genetic medicine. At this consultation, patients are informed of the risk of passing on genetic alterations for which they are carriers to their descendants. They are also given counselling regarding possible alternatives in order to make their family plan a reality through artificial insemination by donor, egg donation or pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.
